Butterflies & Moths: Key Indicators of Insect Population Change

Maurice Avent was fortunate to purchase an SSSI valley close to Bath in 1982 for which he has kept records of butterfly populations for 30 years. He was National Chairman of Butterfly Conservation between 2007 and 2010.

Insects are very much the foundation upon which our planetary diversity of creatures, including the human race, depends to survive. Thanks to the bright colours of butterflies and some species of moth, they are almost the only insects whose populations have been studied for many centuries. Due to their sensitivity to minor environmental changes, butterflies and moths can be used as indicators of the general health of the entire planetary insect population.
