Of the many film adaptations of Dickens’ 1838 cautionary tale, this one is remarkable for faithfully sticking to the writer’s original text, for its dazzling visual style (rendered in motion-capture animation), for its distinguished voice cast, for its terrific score and for being deliciously eerie (and sometimes genuinely scary!). Jim Carrey is outstanding as the voices of the ghosts of Christmas and of Scrooge (modelled on Alastair Sim’s 1951 portrayal) and there’s neither muppet nor mouse in sight! Gary Oldman, Colin Firth, Bob Hoskins and Robin Wright lend splendid support to this treat of a movie which will look suitably spectacular on the big screen. It’s rated PG – very young and / or sensitive children might find it disturbing in places.
