East Lynne by Mrs Henry Wood
12 April @ 11:00 am – 12:00 pm

East Lynne (1861) was one of the most successful novels of the mid-Victorian period. An aristocratic heroine, beautiful and virtuous, not only marries beneath herself, but leaves her husband and children to run off with her villainous seducer. Readers were both shocked and enthralled. With ingredients such as murder, bigamy, lies, secrecy and jealousy, the novel exemplified “sensational fiction” and played on women’s anxieties about duty, class, marriage, motherhood and divorce.
Marie-Louise Luxemburg, author, designer and BRLSI Honorary Member will lead the discussion.
