About Elton House
Elton House is a historic building in Bath, originally built around 1700 and later expanded by Elizabeth and Jacob Elton. It was created to house wealthy visitors who came to Bath to take the waters. By 1750, it had become a grand building with several floors, beautiful staircases, and fine woodwork to accommodate the affluent Georgians. Over time, the fashionable crowd moved further up the hill, and part of the ground floor became a shop, while the rest of the house stayed the same.
In 1982, Miss Philippa Savery, a dedicated city preservationist, gave the house to the city, along with some lovely furniture. She had found the building in 1946, neglected and home to twelve tenants, with a cobbler’s shop on the ground floor. Over the years, Miss Savery bought up the leases and restored the house to its original state. She also created a beautiful garden at the back, and the view from the front still offers a lovely sight of the green fields above Bath.
