Film – Cria Cuervos, Carlos Saura, Spain , 1976
13 October @ 5:30 pm – 8:00 pm
On Sunday 13th October Off the Wall Films brings this classic of Spanish cinema to WSC.
Three orphaned young girls, amongst them the wildly imaginative and quietly determined Ana (played with astonishing poise and intensity by a 9-yr-old Ana Torrent), endure a cloistered summer in a cavernous ghost-filled Madrid mansion under the watchful eyes of a hated aunt and a kindly maid. Ana re-fashions her memories and the cruel, inexplicable behaviour of the adult world into a fantasised reality of her own.
Carlos Saura’s spellbinding film CRÍA CUERVOS, winner of the Cannes Grand Jury prize and released two months after the death of dictator Francisco Franco, is a poignant family drama as well as a powerful allegory on the fall of a regime which had held power in Spain since the end, in 1939, of the civil war. Starring Anna Torrent and Geraldine Chaplin.
“…regarded as Carlos Saura’s greatest masterpiece, one of the best movies of 1976, of the 1970s, of the 20th century and one of best and greatest classics of the Spanish cinema” – Wikipedia.
“The film is a masterpiece of form and technique, and Chaplin and Torrent are both outstanding.” – Peter Bradshaw, The Guardian.
