Futures: The Threats of Uncertainty, the seduction of certainty by Professor Helen Haste, a BRLSI event

6 February @ 7:30 pm 9:00 pm

How do we equip young people – and the experts of tomorrow – to be effective in an uncertain world? How do we manage uncertainty and ambiguity productively and creatively? What will our futures look like?

Recent global and social events – COVID 19, accelerated climate change, the rise of extremism and the backlash against ‘wokeness’ – have ruptured our faith in progressive, manageable change over which we have control. Does a deep fear of the unknown and the uncertain lead us to seek explanations and solutions that are simple and comforting? How do we avoid the seduction of the neat – but dangerously simplistic – solution? Join Helen Haste Prof. Emeritus in Psychology to find out!

Professor Helen Haste, Professor Emeritus in Psychology, University of Bath

More about BRLSI

The Bath Royal and Literary Scientific Institution (BRLSI), supports Science, Literature and Art to the City of Bath and now, thanks to the power of digital technology, the wider world. They provide a community hub for those interested in cultural activities and a host of smaller cultural societies that meet in our building. As if that were not enough, they also maintain a rich geographical and ethnological collection of world renown and importance. BRLSI are celebrating their 200th anniversary this year. Find out more about what is happening
