Open Day at Claverton Pumping Station

Event Series Event Series (See All)

10 May @ 10:00 am 5:00 pm

The Claverton Pumping Station is a rare surviving example of the technology of the Georgian Regency period. The pump started work in 1813, the year Pride and Prejudice was published.

The pump uses the power of the River Avon to drive a massive waterwheel, this then lifts water up 48ft into the Kennet and Avon Canal. Burning no fuel and making no waste it is the ultimate in environmentally friendly technology.

From April to October, the station welcomes visitors on the second Saturday and Tuesday of each month, as well as the Early May Bank Holiday. The pump will be run on the Saturday open days. On Tuesdays the pumphouse will be open but the pump may not be running. Running of the pump is subject to river conditions, ageing machinery, and ageing volunteers!
