June: Place-Sourced Potential With Jonny Buckland, Studio Saar
This talk examines the work of Studio Saar, an Anglo-Indian architectural practice, through the framework of Place-Sourced Potential. It explores how architecture can uplift, inspire, and drive positive social change by uncovering the unique identity or “essence” of a place, community, or project. Using two case studies from distinct cultural contexts, the session will identify what makes these projects inherently unique—their deep purpose, history, cultural narratives, and environmental characteristics. Each case study demonstrates how architecture, when authentically rooted in the essence of its context, can produce outcomes that resonate deeply with both the place and its people. And showcases how this approach reveals latent possibilities within a place—opportunities for growth, innovation, and regeneration that are uniquely tied to its specific conditions. By embracing this lens, the talk illustrates the transformative potential of architecture to connect deeply with its surroundings and create meaningful, place-responsive solutions.

Jonny Buckland began his career studying alongside Ananya in 2003 at the University of Bath, UK. Almost twenty years later Studio Saar has been established to continue their shared vision in crafting uplifting places and spaces. Jonny gained his professional qualifications at London Metropolitan University studying under Professor Maurice Mitchel and Professor Robert Mull, which embedded a strong interest in social value architecture. Jonny has previously worked for two Stirling Prize winning practices, Feilden Clegg Bradley (FCB) Studios and Allford Hal Monaghan Morris (AHMM) before setting up practice independently. Jonny is an ARB RIBA registered architect in the UK and a Regenerative Practitioner having studied under the Regenesis Group.
