Saturnalia trail at the Roman Baths

For young history enthusiasts, the Saturnalia trail (21 – 31 December) provides an exciting journey through Roman holiday traditions, including gift-giving, home decorating, and festive feasting.

Saturnalia was the most popular holiday in the Roman year and marked the winter solstice from 17 to 23 December. It shared many similarities with modern-day festivities and was an occasion for celebrating, visiting friends, decorating homes with greenery, lighting candles, and exchanging gifts.
