Stanley Spencer: Sandham Memorial Chapel and The Spencer Gallery in Cookham

Stanley Spencer’s fervent, if somewhat unconventional Christian faith, was frequently reflected in his work, and was regarded as controversial when it was first exhibited- This was especially true of his paintings set in Cookham, where Spencer lived much of his adult life. The Spencer Gallery provides a unique insight into the man, the artist and his work. Guests first visit Spencer’s paintings at Sandham Memorial Chapel – a colossal undertaking, which was modelled on Giotto’s Arena Chapel in Padua. Seventeen huge canvases depict Spencer’s experiences during World War I, commissioned by Mary and John Behrend, to commemorate Mary’s brother who was killed in the conflict
