The historic Abbey Green features at its centre the celebrated ancient London Plane Tree. It was planted in 1880, at the time of the marriage of Sarah, daughter of Thomas Jefferys, a chimney sweep living at no.2 Abbey Green. This tree looks much older than its 140 years – looks are often deceptive! It is now a gigantic presence, towering over the lovely courtyard full of cafes and shops. The Green is also one of the focal points of the annual Bath Christmas Market, filled with festive chalets and Christmas lights.
In 2024 a plaque on the Plane Tree was unveiled by Bath Urban Treescape, as it forms a part of the Leafy Legacies Tree Trail throughout the city, which encourages people to explore and appreciate the the botanical beauty and history of the many trees in Bath.
