Bath Assembly Rooms, on Bennett Street, were designed by John Wood the Younger in 1769 as elegant public rooms at the heart of fashionable eighteenth-century Bath life. It was a place where Georgian society would promenade in their finery. Jane Austen visited the Rooms during her years living in Bath and set scenes from two of her novels there. The building is currently closed for renovations as part of an exciting project to create a new Georgian visitor experience, with archaeological investigations already uncovering fascinating Georgian-era objects beneath the Rooms, from wig curlers to wine bottles. It’s due to reopen to visitors in 2027.
