At over 1,000 feet long and 100 feet wide, Great Pulteney Street is the widest, grandest thoroughfare in Bath, flanked by beautiful Georgian properties and completed in 1789 to a design by architect Thomas Baldwin, commissioned by Sir William Pulteney. At one end sits Laura Place with its pretty central fountain; at the other stands the magnificent Holburne Museum, the city’s first public art gallery, backing onto Sydney Gardens, the only remaining eighteenth-century pleasure gardens in the country. It’s also home to some of Bath’s most prestigious addresses, including boutique hotels and guest houses, and has featured as a filming location in Les Misérables, Vanity Fair, Persuasion and The Duchess.
