Becoming an Actor
27 August @ 2:00 pm – 4:00 pm

Becoming an Actor is an event hosted in partnership with BRLSI’s Academy of Imagination, the Theatre Royal Bath and the Bath Theatre Academy.
The aim is to offer an interactive workshop and panel discussion which will highlight the many options open to young people who wish to train as a professional actor, without doubt, the most competitive career option open to young people.
But what sort of training do they need to maximise their chance of success? 50 years ago, most actors trained at one of a small number of drama schools – and most would have benefited from a full grant. Now, there are many more training institutes, and universities offer a variety of courses including Applied Theatre, Screen Acting, Drama and Performing Arts whilst students now have to pay for their fees accruing significant debt which can be a deterrent. The emphasis on acting in the theatre has also shifted as television, film and advertising has provided a larger proportion of an actor’s income.
A panel of actors will discuss the options, reflect on their own experience, and provide helpful advice on the audition process and taking the first steps towards a professional life as an actor.
Event partners Theatre Royal Bath will be presenting their Ralph Fiennes Season and a special guest from the As You Like It company will be in attendance on the day. Alongside the representative from the As You Like it Company, BRLSI will have Feargus Woods Dunlop from New Old Friends who trained at Bretton Hall and who teaches part-time at Bath Spa University. He also regularly performs at the Theatre Royal. A member of the Wise Children company will also be on the panel. Wise Children have a training centre in Frome and run a variety of interesting professional courses.
