Bath has become famous for its variety of bookshops. Maybe you’ve been inspired by the Jane Austen 250 celebrations, or are you looking for the latest bestseller or a personal recommendation? Welcome Ambassador Ann runs through where to visit when you’re in Bath.
Until 22nd September 2025, you can spot literary characters in the Jane Austen character trail throughout Bath.
“Bath has lots to do in all weathers, but if the rain is pouring down or you fancy some peace and quiet, what better than spending some time in our lovely bookshops?

Bath is proud to have two independent booksellers with friendly staff eager to help and make recommendations. Mr. B’s Emporium in quiet John Street is bigger than it first appears – make sure you explore all the floors, and enjoy plenty of space here to settle down and read for a bit.

Topping & Co. is in York Street – you will feel almost overwhelmed at the sight of so many books in such a beautiful historic building! And there are more downstairs in the basement. They have a busy programme of author events, so check out their website for what’s on.
For pre-loved and vintage, visit the three charity bookshops, all staffed by fabulous volunteers:
Dorothy House Bookshop in Broad Street, supporting Bath’s hospice care charity, is a huge shop that also sells vinyl, CD’s and DVD’s. They always have some chilled-out music playing.

Oxfam Books in Lower Borough Walls has a great range of books, music, and film, including a local interest section on Bath, and a good selection of rarities and collectables.
Julian House supports people who are homeless. The first part of their shop in Walcot Street has clothing, vintage homewares and music/film – but head downstairs to the basement bookshop and you will be amazed! There’s always something unusual to catch your eye and plenty of space for browsing.
Bath is also home to the famous George Bayntun antiquarian bookseller and bindery, which dates back to 1829.

For the serious book addict, there is Bath Old Books at the top of Margaret’s Buildings, off Brock Street near the Royal Crescent and the Circus. Several experienced book-dealers share this shop to sell second-hand and rare books, and there’s a large stock to explore.
On the way, you could visit the unique and special Persephone Books at the top of George Street – their window displays are always interesting.
Last but by no means least, a shout-out to Bath Central Library, a beautiful modern quiet space right in the centre of the city, with a children’s library area as well.
Happy reading!”
Thank you to our Welcome Ambassador Ann for such a brilliant summary.
From 31 May to 22nd September 2025, pick up a leaflet from Bath BID, the Jane Austen Centre, My Small World, and selected other venues, and be entered into the prize draw if you can identify all the characters on the Jane Austen character trail through historic Bath.
